Wikimedia CH is a non-profit organisation that supports the free dissemination of knowledge in Switzerland.
Recognised as a chapter of the Wikimedia Foundation, it is a financially and legally independent entity subject to Swiss regulations and laws.
In order to take targeted measures to reduce its climate and environmental impact, Wikimedia commissioned Carbotech to analyse its operations and submit proposals.
The particular challenge of this analysis lay in the association’s decentralised, 100% virtual organisational structure. It does not have a head office. All employees work exclusively from home and almost all work part-time. Electricity, heat, consumables and many other factors that are usually linked to the infrastructure still have to be calculated. The organisation’s product is also largely digital.
These unusual conditions required extensive experience and methodological expertise in order to make the most relevant and sensible assumptions possible.
